Levi Strauss (1830-1902) travelled across America in 1850 with a wagonload of canvas, which he hoped to convert into tents to sell to miners in the Californian gold rush.

Instead he found there was greater demand for the fabric as hard-wearing trousers and overalls. Davis patented their garments in 1873. It was not until the 1940s that jeans became widely adopted as casual wear.
